Wedding Trivia

Engagement Ring

The engagement ring is thought to date back to the Ancient Egyptians when an item of value or a coin was given to the Bride- To- Be by the man as a symbol of their agreement to marry. Over the centruies this item has evolved into a ring to symbolise eternity.

The wedding cake

The modern Wedding cake has evolved over many years. It dates back to Roman Times when a loaf of bread was broken over the brides head to symbolise fertility. The guests then ate the crumbs which were believed to be good luck!.

The Bouquet

The tradition of tossing the bouquet was adapted from an earlier custom where the bride threw her left shoe over her shoulder to indicate her new status and departure from her old life. The one that caught the shoe wouldbe the next to marry! It is thought that the bouquet replaced the shoe as it was much more convenient for the bride rather than to hobble about for the rest of the day missing her left shoe.

The Veil

Traditionally the broide wore a veil as a form of modesty. It covered her face as she walked down the aisle and kept her hidden from the groom until the last moment. The idea was to pull back the veil at the beginning of the wedding ceremony so that the groomcould see his future wifes face. Sometimes for the very first time: an unveiling of his prize.
